Design

In Les Misérables I had to convey the poverty and desperation the French poor were facing as well as their hope for a better future.
I used dirty pastel greens, whites and, blues to convey poverty and desperation while in more hopeful scenes using warmer colors on top of the dismal color palette, because while the characters might be momentarily happy or hopeful, they still have the reality of their life outside that moment.
I used texture as both a literal and figurative design element, sometimes a brick gobo as a cobblestone street or a grid gobo as a light from sewer grates, while other times I used a rough texture to help convey the dismal living conditions of the French people.
