Amelie is a story about how even though we all feel isolated in our daily lives we are all connected and small acts of kindness matter. Amelie is also a story about finding your way in the world and learning to take risks to find love and grow. When designing lighting for Amelie her isolated and neurosis filled childhood was very important. This is symbolized by a light olive green overtone throughout the play. I chose this because even while Amelie is growing, taking risks, doing good deeds and finding love, the overtone of her childhood and the way that impacts her is always there.
There are two types of color palettes in my lighting design for Amelie. “Real World” Palettes all had a dusty/muted tone to them with key light in the amber realm. All the imagination palettes had a more saturated and sometimes cleaner look to bring the audience into the world of imagination/fantasy.
The music in Amelie feels like it is floating and landing and to enhance this I used a lot of shin light to illustrate the temporary suspension of belief.
Lighting played a huge part in the setting of scene for Amelie because it is so fast paced and dynamic, there is no time for major scene changes.
